BLK JKS (pronounced Black Jacks) is an alternative rock quartet from Johannesburg.

Ten years after their genre-traversing, trailblazing, award-winning debut “After Robots”, they are still regarded by many in the know as one of the most underrated and best live rock bands in Africa today. Alongside once being dubbed “Africa’s Best New Band” by Rolling Stone Magazine International, drummer Tshepang Ramoba was named best musician at SXSW (2009) by Billboard Magazine.

BLK JKS are riffing against a digital age, where the value of music is often judged more by the monetization of social media ‘likes’ than by the cultural content it communicates.

Commitment to cultural activism is what fuels the band’s return, with a brightly burning album “Abantu: Before Humans” and new single, “Harare”, featuring vocalist Morena Leraba from Lesotho.

The band describes “Harare” as a “song of migration”, as it manifests their continued mission to map uncharted spaces in the music of the Diaspora, trying to reach deeper into the roots.
